Electrician testing a commercial consumer unit for a Derby business

Electrical contractors for Derby businesses

We work with businesses across Derby and Derbyshire on everything from office rewiring and commercial consumer unit upgrades to multi-point EV charging and commercial alarm systems.

Commercial work differs from domestic in scale, regulation and how much disruption a business can absorb. Offices, warehouses, retail units and industrial premises carry higher loads, more circuits and often a three-phase supply, so every job starts with a site survey and a written specification before we quote.

Whether you're a landlord needing an EICR, a business upgrading its supply for new equipment, or a property owner planning a refurbishment or change of use, you get one point of contact from survey to certification.

Commercial electrical services

The work businesses ask us for most. Each one is surveyed, specified and certified to BS 7671.

How a commercial job runs

Most businesses can't close for electrical work, so the plan is agreed before anyone picks up a tool.

  1. Site survey We look at the installation, the supply, the equipment you run and how the premises are used day to day.
  2. Written specification You get a clear scope and a fixed quote, with any options and their costs set out separately.
  3. Planned installation Work is phased around your opening hours where possible, so areas stay usable and staff can keep working.
  4. Testing and certification Every circuit is tested, and you receive the certificates and test results your insurer and landlord will ask for.

Compliance and paperwork

Insurers, landlords and local authorities all expect evidence that a commercial installation is safe. We carry out all work to BS 7671 (18th Edition) and provide the documents that go with it:

  • Electrical Installation Certificates for new work and rewires
  • Minor Works Certificates for smaller alterations
  • EICRs with every observation coded and explained in plain English
  • Test results for every circuit, kept on file for repeat work

The IET recommends inspecting commercial premises such as offices and shops at least every five years, and private landlords in England must have an EICR at least every five years. We'll tell you when your next one is due.

Commercial prices

Commercial jobs are priced after a site survey, because the supply, the cable routes and access vary so much. These published figures give a starting point.

Workplace Charging Scheme grant, until 31 March 2027 Up to £500 per socket

Grant: up to 75% of costs, up to 40 sockets per business. More detail in our EV charger installation cost guide.

Refurbishments, new builds and change of use

We also work on new build and change-of-use projects as part of the wider Derbyshire Specialists Group, giving you a single point of contact for electrical, plumbing, joinery and finishing trades.

That means one programme, one invoice and one guarantee across the whole job, and no gaps between trades when a unit is being fitted out to a deadline.

Commercial electrician FAQs

Do you work on three-phase supplies?

Yes. Many offices, warehouses and industrial units run on a three-phase supply, and we install, alter and test three-phase circuits, boards and equipment connections as well as single-phase.

Can you carry out the work without closing my business?

Usually, yes. We agree the programme with you at the survey and phase the work around your opening hours where possible, so most areas stay in use while we work.

How often does a commercial property need an EICR?

The IET recommends at least every five years for commercial premises such as offices and shops, and sooner where the installation is older or heavily used. Private landlords in England must have one at least every five years. Your insurer may set its own timescale.

Do you provide certificates for insurers and landlords?

Yes. Every job comes with the right certificate under BS 7671: an Electrical Installation Certificate for new work, a Minor Works Certificate for smaller alterations, or an EICR for inspections, along with the test results.

Can you install EV chargers for staff and fleet vehicles?

Yes. We install workplace charge points with load management, and can help you apply for the Workplace Charging Scheme, which pays up to £500 per socket for up to 40 sockets until 31 March 2027.

Do you cover the whole of Derbyshire?

We're based in Derby and work across the city and the surrounding towns, including Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Swadlincote, Belper and Ripley. Call to check your location.
